WOUNDEDSPiRiT: FOREVER young

The year was 1989. Tim Burton had just released his version of Batman , the reality of Cops on Fox was taking the world by storm, and groups such as En Vogue, The Rembrandts, and West Bromwich’s WOUNDEDSPiRiT formed. For the next six years, WOUNDEDSPiRiT played everywhere they could and impressed the likes of Steve Wright at Radio 1. While they had a run in Spain in 2000, the band seemed to come to an end after that. That is until 2016. They got back together for a Judgestock show and by the following year were back in the studio working on the first song for their debut album, 2018’s FOREVER young.

With a sound that falls under a variety of umbrellas, WOUNDEDSPiRiT could fit in a multitude of places. FOREVER young not only incorporates various styles but topics as well. From songs about love like “Love is By My Side” and “She Knows” to more political tunes such as “Fake News” and “STANDUP,” it’s clear that the talented musicians that makeup WOUNDEDSPiRiT had a lot to say and wanted to present a well-rounded record with every side of themselves showing for the world to see.

When it comes to standouts on FOREVER young , one can’t go wrong with the title track. A cover of Alphaville’s signature hit, WOUNDEDSPiRiT did enough to make it their own without stripping away what we love about it; the vocals. Jason Kelly serves up pitch perfection with this rendition of a well-known track. Another song that will have people hitting repeat is “10000 Shades of Blue.” From the fun arrangement to the upbeat delivery, it hits all the marks and then some.

Chellcy Reitsma Rises Above with ‘Black Water’

Creativity was always a part of Chellcy Reitsma’s narrative. As a child, she sang and danced alongside her family to a variety of styles. It was then she discovered one doesn’t have to pick just one lane as all music is precious. With time she put music on the back burner and focused on art and dance throughout college. However, injuries sustained via dance left her unable to perform in that respect. While some would’ve wallowed in the loss, Chellcy took it as an opportunity to get back to music and explore the opportunities it held. That was in 2015. Four years later she’s riding high on finding her voice and using it to captivate listeners around the world with her latest release, Black Water.

Times of Malta has noted of Black Water , “…communication is perfectly expressed through her strong deep voice, which, backed by the haunting sound of the harmonica keening a sad lullaby, forms the backbone of her latest…” and we couldn’t agree more. Black Water never ceases to say it like it is. Never holding back, Chellcy is as raw as can be with songs like the dynamic single, as well as the girl-power anthem of “She-Man.” A poet at heart, Chellcy also allows that side of her to take the spotlight, even if for just a minute, with her spoken word poetry at the end in “No Regrets.” A gamble that paid off, it was a delicate touch to cap the EP.

While she may still be at the start of her musical career, Black Water had proven that Chellcy Reitsma has a long road ahead of her.

The inspiration for 6est7 ‘s new album “6ROKEN” has to do with everything and everybody around him. If you are a fan of legendary musicians such as The Weeknd, Drake and others like them, this album is a must have for your Hip-Hop collection. The vibes he gives off is nothing like what I hear today.

“For some reason music allows me to say what I want but just with a beat behind it!”, says 6est7. He views this album as the avenue that gives him the freedom to express what he really wants. Those of us who are working all day from 7-7 and have to keep a closed mouth (no profanity) can surely relate.

In case you were wondering about the artist’s unique name… It is actually his last name which is “Best”. He turned the “B” in best to a “6” and added “7” at the end. “Everything I do I just gotta do it different or if not different… special.”

The powerful fourth album from the duo of Mark Moogalian and Isabelle Risacher, Love is the Only Game in Town, is a twelve song collection from a self-described alt rock outfit. Close listening to the dozen songs here reveals something much different – this is a band that, without pretension or obscurity, has pushed their songwriting into outright art that manages to touch base with pop songwriting fundamentals. While this is very intelligent material, it strives to entertain the listener as well. Many bands and performers who adopt this sort of sound produce stiff, frozen results, but this release is far from a bloodless exercise.

They boldly open things with the album’s title track. It has a minimalist slant from the first note, but it isn’t the sound of a skeletal song. The song is like a sleek, streamlined arrow and doesn’t waste either a note or word in attempting to deliver its message. Secret Season’s lyrics are consistently strong throughout and the title song is one of their most fully realized texts. “She’s So Mysterious” makes more dramatic use of Moogalian’s guitar and has a much rounder, fatter sound overall, but the same stylistic sensibility guides the music. Risacher handles lead vocal chores on “Show Me What You’ve Got” and embodies the song’s lyrics in memorable fashion. Her voice resonates with a degree of technical excellence, but it’s her emotional edge that stands out much more. The yearning in this song is quite real. “Linen White” couldn’t be more different however. This song has a much more relaxed stance than the two preceding songs and Secret Season’s decision to allow it more space to breathe than many of the album’s other tracks gives it a breezy agility other songs lack.

“Flow” has a much more pensive atmosphere than earlier songs. Moogalian’s acoustic guitar plays a secondary musical role here and the song’s focus on its simple melody and vocal harmonies makes it an unusual affecting art pop song with a light touch. The artier aspects are even more pronounced on “Exhibit A” with its treated, fragmentary guitar and scattered percussion. The song’s pacing remains fluid throughout but solidifies in the song’s second half. Secret Season turns towards the blues and a dual vocal approach on “Mean Streak”, but the mood resolutely stays low key and understated. This is a duo capable of invoking formula and cliché in unexpectedly fresh ways – the dynamics are key. “Mean Streak” is laced with a handful of moments when Secret Season chooses to pepper the arrangement with subtle, non-blues elements or else brings proceedings to a brief stop in dramatic fashion. “I Wanna Be With You” has a deep groove with understated acoustic guitar laid over top. It’s probably the album’s best pure groove and Moogalian responds with a vocal full of hushed, palpable yearning.

This is as artful as it comes. It’s a bit curious to call it alt rock, but labels are ultimately meaningless. The best way of describing Secret Season’s musical thrust is to say they expertly balance tradition with a commitment to twist said tradition to their own ends. Their fourth album should receive rapturous attention from their fans while those unfamiliar with the duo’s talents are well advised to seek this out.

The majority of Barton’s album is inclined towards the rock genre with a heavy experimental vibe. There are clear evidences of old school rock influence most notably from the very beginning and end of the album. From the first track, “We are the Ones,” to the second track, “Way About Her,” until “Once Upon a Time,” there is a clear reminiscence in the fast-paced beats and heavy melody. Kenneth Barton clearly knows his guitar in his liberal and energetic guitar solos that bounces with an energy.

By the time “The Healer” comes, the rapid pace of the first few songs slowly wind down into a satisfying mellow pace. This song foreshadows uncharacteristic twists of songs halfway into the album. One can find a jazzy quality; but the steady rock influences remain afloat nonetheless. The next song is mellow as well. “Tool” brings small bouts of modern experimentation. Barton juggles the mixture of old and new tunes, which heralds the entrance of “Glamour in the Sky” that solidifies a fresher note.

Certain highlights of this album come from “Wtf,” with unwound energy from the past few songs. The melody is very upbeat and cleanly picks up from where the first few songs left. As always, phenomenal tones and a clever mixture of the vocals and accompaniment gave well-deserved justice to the destination of the song. Another song that stands out is “Gatekeeper.” Which takes the time to build up the atmosphere. This helps the audience ‘catch up’ with the fast pace and creative blend of fast paced tones and a slower tread. The lyrics is catchy and the vocalist can sync with the power of the beats. Although the middle of the album has a shaky standing, the end headed by “Bridge to Nowhere” and the songs that follow, give a satisfying conclusion armed with an impressive work of the bass and guitar.

As if to contradict the energetic quality of the highlights, Barton introduces “Once Upon a Time.” A song that slows down with a soft blend of vocals and the ambience of a ballad. This softer quality exhibits a tender note that’s fully unleashed in “For Awhile” in the middle of the album which may seem out of place at first glance, but was foreshadowed in the acoustic tunes of the former song. This detour was also contained in experimental nudges that plunge the former songs into different lights. Afterwards, the song “Some Day” comes and the distinct tune of rock is almost extinguished in the soft female vocals and deceptively acoustic melody. These songs definitely give the album a uniqueness as the unusual pace, alternating from speeding up to slowing down, welcomes the surprises and dishes out unexpected melodies right in the middle of the album.

But after this detour, the focus is returned to where it began. “The Red Line” retraces the album back to old school rock. As the song “Bridge to Nowhere” comes, the intro abruptly pours an energy-filled melody that rock songs usually carry. Those with a fondness for instrumental mixes will find this song very satisfying. It is a balm that comforts those who may have been caught off-guard by the prior detours. Afterwards, “The Dead Hand” maintains the pace with no more exchanges that would clue-in most that Barton means to end the journey of his album. This goodbye culminates in “The Big Dig” which comes and ends with none of the former tenderness, but all of the impressive courage and melody.

Overall, the album is rated 6/10. This is because several songs need more technical polishing because the vocals tend to be overpowered by the instrumentals, especially in “Once Upon a Time” and “Palo Alto.” While this doesn’t prevent from appreciating the album as a whole, the songs in need of more polishing aren’t given the fullest potential because of the technical barriers. Nonetheless, the highlights certainly make up for them in terms of sound quality and blending. I’d recommend this album for those who have a taste for rock and favor old rock bands.

For JAcOB, it’s the things he’s seen, the feelings he’s felt and the life he’s lived thus far that started him down not only a musical path, but a poetic one as well. With that, he’s created a couple of albums and more than a handful of poetry publications that are all as expressive as the last.

With his alternative meets folk sound, he’s like the musical offspring of Linkin Park and Martyn Joseph. For JAcOB, music is his passion and he continues to put himself out there in hopes to not only reach people, but touch them. He says, “I am a sufferer of severe depression and it’s a lonely place to be…you can be in a room surrounded by your best friends and advocates and still be unreachable and alone.” He’s also a purest with sound, noting, “I refuse to use any vocal moderation software (like auto tune) as I wanted the listener to hear the raw ‘naked’ quality of my voice in this honest piece of work. I feel this has embellished and enhanced the music and its message.”

Always writing from the heart, he’s poured all that and more into his work. Since traveling to war torn areas around the world, he’s seen the best and the worst mankind has to offer and he draws inspiration from those memories. His worldly outlook has helped him garner airplay in various countries including North America, Canada, Israel, UK and Germany.

Currently JAcOB is putting the final touching on his sophomore release, the naked truth , due out July 29, 2016. After that he’ll prepare for his 2017 release, For the Forgotten.

More than a little is the lead single from Nashville-based country artist Cody Webb’s upcoming EP, which releases this summer. The song breezes along at an energetic pace, with Cody’s songwriting capabilities holding the song together and making it enjoyable. The lyrics leave a lasting impression due to their catchy nature, with the musical arrangements and Cody’s laidback singing perfectly complementing them. The track has everything going for it and makes for a pleasing listen, though it does not offer anything extraordinary. Here’s my interpretation of the lyrics:

I’m gonna turn your porch into a dance floor tonight

Make sure this first one’s just right

You’re having a wonderful dinner with her. Things are going great. You loosen up and start opening yourself up to her. You start to forget the nagging work troubles. You’re sensing an amazing connection, as always. You begin to feel at home with her – with lovely, beautiful her. And finally it’s time to drop her home. You can’t stop yourself from smiling on the drive back. And when you’ve reached her place, she gets out slowly and leans over and invites you in, to your surprise and delight. Jimmy actually started drums at an early age and discovered the Beatles and other bands of that era. Soon after, he started playing guitar which opened a new musical world. Cream, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, the Blues Breakers became the musical foundation for him as he started his first band, “The Silence” and then his power trio “Jax.” His guitar mentor, “Fast Freddie” Rapillo has been working with Jimmy for a number of years. After watching a Buddy Guy/Johnny Lang concert, Jimmy was inspired to form a professional band of seasoned musicians with diverse musical backgrounds and experience. Blue On Arrival features Gary Swan – keys, Jon Fowler – producer, Melvin Brannon – bass, David Daniel Diaz – drums. This release is different from the Jax Trio stuff but really just a step higher into more mainstream rock and blues, combined with a rhythm section that doesn’t get any better, and a lot of piano and horns for a jazz school touch that magically bombards the senses. “Murder” is the lead off barnstorming affair that comes complete with solos, particularly from Dan Reed Network bass play Melvin Brannon. Hot stuff cooks and outright fries the melon from first to last second. I put it up there with some of the best playing around. This band are big on soul, as you hear instantly hear it pulsating. A round of applause for coming on so strongly at the outset. What a bone crushing opener that goes a long way as it is, with so long to go. It’s like getting the fresh wind knocked out of you. A mean harmonica is blown all over this. If that isn’t tasty enough, perhaps “Hit My Stride” is the ticket. They both are as far as this reviewer is concerned. I can’t fault one thing about this gem either. It’s a polished little treat with a snazzy wrapper. It just keeps grooving along as it bubbles with a soothing edge. This has hit written all over it. I really get off on it the most, but there isn’t any part of it where I don’t. These are all good tracks that compel to a strong degree. If you’re a true blues lover and don’t recognize any of the chosen covers, you will be glad to hear “Crossroad Blues” get a good workout as it succeeds at changing the mood to a more serious one. You can’t turn this down at any rate, it’s great. And that is three for three so far, which has me hooked as usual. I have to admit I listened to it twice in a row the first time I heard this CD. They just keep rocking steady with the sophisticated appeal of “Rock Me Down,” which is another winner. Talk about getting around, this does the uber-biz. There are several slow grooves and this is one of them. They all do their best work on these slinkier tracks. But the taste never lets up anywhere, to be honest. The message here is don’t mess around. And it makes good sense to take a good break in the action and bring on a brooding ballad that takes Jimmy into more of an adult contemporary shade on “Poison,” which isn’t the only spot where he does this. The consensus is he does it well, as he smokes on this with pure confidence. By now you get the feeling there are no fillers here, and no second rate talent to be had either. The guitar playing and harmonica mix together hypnotically and send a chill up the spine. This is worth the whole experience. The same heat continues but with more volume applied on “I Can’t Stop,” and stop it does not, as he squeezes even more juice out on this hell of an effort. Hot to trot blues of the roadhouse sort if I ever heard it. This is extended by the next tune which gets back into the same tone as described previously, with a folkish vocal touch this time. And there is nothing wrong with that, as he gets away with more than one theme without weakening the blues rock structure any. Great stuff. And if that doesn’t float your boat, “Best I Could” just might help with that. It’s generally more of the same but the horn delights and extends the mood which gives it an overall classy feeling, which is particularly breezy. If you like piano and jazzy inflections in your blues, this is for you. Jimmy proves his chops all over this, just and he does on the other tracks but probably puts in his overall best into this, which suits the title as well.

Your opinion might vary, but I’ll take the final track right along with the rest of them. This is another point where I hit repeat before starting the whole thing over to get completely wrapped up in a great album with all great backing turned in around this uprising youthful but old soul of an artist. “Stuck In Glue,” is a diversion piece that wastes no time before it’s over. Not a bad way to end a very good album that could only stand to benefit from more songs, preferably more originals. Anyone would agree by the time they get through this and left wanting more.

There is a guy who is a Blues and Americana badass and he has those genres running through his veins. Well you are thinking that there are probably a lot of people like that, but this guy is special in a way. Coming from the great city of Los Angeles, this renegade of blues and swamplands goes by the name of RJ Comer. From singing in churches and around campfires, and working a “regular job” this guy recorded an EP called the “Nightly Suicide”. By the first sound of the name you are probably thinking that it is a black metal EP, but you got that wrong. With his powerful voice and emotional performances RJ has made a name for himself. As he has already released two albums and two EP’s prior to “Nightly Suicide” RJ Comer has toured all around the North America. From pubs, taverns and biker bars RJ has left his mark, captivating the audiences with his great performances.

He has also worked with a lot of great names over the years, one of whom is the Grammy winning producer Matt Hyde. Coming in as his latest EP is the “Nightly Suicide” an Americana Rock oriented with a little spice of Blues. Containing 6 tracks, the EP is a story of a lot of things. Things like love, relationships, addiction, and the great open road. “Losing What You’re Losing” is one of the songs on the EP that speaks about a relationship, about how you got to lose something to get something, of how it’s not all black and white. The lyrics are about his will to get over the fact that he has been hurt too many times, and still not giving up on love but warning her that she has much to lose. Followed with some sweet guitar playing and RJ emotional vocal, this is one of the awesome songs on this great EP. One of the tracks that caught my ear is also the “The Moon Ain’t Fallen on Me”. Starting with only guitar and vocals, the story unfolds. Angels, demons, life, comic and all that in a bottle of bourbon, drinking till despair but getting back up, because the moon still haven’t fallen on him. A song about the right choices, about never giving up, learning to fight and even if you fall short rising up again. And the song that the EP has its name from, the “Nightly Suicide” brings that rock blues swing, rolling in with some great guitar riffs. Talking about life, women, booze and yeah the great open road, a true image of a badass. Living the life, riding in to the sun set and telling the story from the bottom of the bottle this song takes you there on that journey. At least it does it for me.

The conclusion is that this is a great EP with some real soul. Done with great production, the guitars that are played with great feel, drums and bass with some simple but sweet grooves, this EP brings that Americana sound with the vibe of the open road. It takes you to a special place, so it is a must have for sure.

Oleg Frish is a multitalented artist and performer with a successful career as a singer, entertainer, actor and a journalist. Ever since he was a small child in Russia, he was fascinated with music, especially the few American hits that managed to make their way through the Iron Curtain. Now he has collected some of the best big band and jazz hits, creating the amazing album “Duets With My American Idols”. However, his collaboration with some of the scene’s great artists is what makes his work really special, as it captures the spirit of a whole era in about 45 minutes.

After the introduction to the album (by Connie Francis), we get to hear the fun, big band piece “You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You”. Oleg’s honey-like smooth voice, as well as his almost inaudible, yet sweet, Russian accent, make this song very easy to listen to. With “You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You” Frish fulfills his dream of playing with the American rhythm and blues singer Gary U.S. Bonds (mostly known for his hits “New Orleans” and “Quarter to Three”). Next on our playlist is “The Way You Look Tonight”. This romantic, beautiful duet with Peggy March (best known for “I Will Follow Him”, “Romeo and Julia”) is undeniably one of the gems on “Duets With My American Idols”. If you’re in love and want to express it, play “The Way You Look Tonight” to that special someone and surely they’ll be yours, as no one can remain indifferent to this gorgeous ballad.

The next song we get to hear is “Day By Day” with the late Ben E. King (known for hits like “Stand By Me” and “Save the Last Dance For Me”). This fun, lively piece with all of its trumpet and vocal solos one major flaw – it’s only 2 and a half minutes long. Oleg’s next great performance is Jo Stafford’s “The Things We Did Last Summer”. This song will calm you down and get you thinking about sweet memories with a loved one. “Sunny”, feat B.J. Thomas (“Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head”) sounds simply amazing in Oleg’s version with rock and Latin elements. The smooth instrumental “What a Difference a Day Makes” (made famous by Dinah Washington) is another of the gems of the album. “Hello Dolly” is next, a duet with Lainie Kazan, as once again Oleg’s unique vocals bring a lot to this classic. Next, we get to hear the interpretation of Anita Bryant’s “Till There Was You”, which, of course, sounds great, as by now Oleg has proven his talent.
