Make Room for YD

Tell us about yourself and your music
My real name is Paul but I go by YD I’ve been rapping since I was 8. I was born in Washington DC and it’s where i lived most of my life until I landed in Colorado where I reside now. I am not a huge fan of categorizing myself but if had to I would say I am a “Rapper/Singer/Songwriter”
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest song release was produced by Haven Beats and is titled “Make Room”.
What inspired you to write this release?
So it had been quite a while since I had made a new track due to life and I was just randomly searching around on YouTube found this beat and everything just came to me. It was my take on a rigamortis type flow. Since I had not released a new song in almost a year I wanted to come back with a bang and just show off how lyrical I can be and I think I did just that, not to brag on myself too much.
Describe the writing and recording process
For me the lyrics come in burst and sometimes I’ll just hear a beat and immediately know exactly what to say. With Make Room the hook came to me first and I just kept trying to make sure the lyrics and flow played well with each other took quite a few tries and I know I could have done better but at the end I love what i created.
Any plans to hit the road?
I currently have nothing scheduled as of the time of writing but I will have news on shows and performances early next year as I’ve actually been offered a few gigs in 2020
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I make my music with only one rule regardless of the beat, the scenario, the song “Lyrics Always Matter”. Don’t get me wrong, I love a fire beat that knocks speakers but if you ain’t saying nothing then it’s all for nothing. I pride myself on putting my best work forward lyrically
Who have you been listening to lately?
I recently discovered both Tame Impala and Tori Y Moi and their bodies of work are quite a pleasant Listen. But I have had Jaden Smith album ERYS on repeat since it dropped back in July
Who are your biggest influences?
When I think of artists who i draw the most influence from four names come to mind, Kendrick, Kanye, Wale, and Meek.
Tell us about your passions
I love video games. One day I’ll probably go back to school for Video Game Development next to music I love video games. favorite game is Kingdom Hearts 2
What else is happening next in your world?
My music has been growing slowly but surely and I’m happier than I’ve been in a while which gives me even more confidence in what I’m creating
Thanks for an awesome interview, YD
